Susan Gowin
Principal, River Eves Elementary School
Susan Gowin began her career as a preschool teacher in Manchester, New Hampshire while enrolled at Notre Dame College earning a degree in education. Shorting after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in teaching, she moved to Cumming, Georgia and secured a position at Otwell Middle School as a special education teacher. During her first year of teaching, she got engaged, and due to a job offer her husband received, moved to Virginia. While living in Virginia, she had the opportunity to teach both special education and general education students in first through fifth grades. In 2008, Susan’s family decided to relocate back to Georgia so they could be closer to their families. Upon returning, she was hired as a Georgia Pre-K teacher at the Crabapple Kids R Kids where she taught Georgia Pre-K for three years. When her oldest daughter started kindergarten, she was exposed to the amazing work Fulton County Schools was doing and wanted to be a part of it, so she applied for a teaching position. While her plan was to secure a position in the fall of 2011, she was fortunate enough to be hired at River Eves Elementary School in mid-January. For the past 12 years, she has had the honor and pleasure of working with the staff, students, and parents there in various positions including early intervention teacher, fifth grade teacher, response to intervention specialist, and literacy coach. In 2020, she was honored to be promoted to the role of assistant principal, and for the past three years, has worked alongside the River Eves staff and community to create and foster a meaningful, high-quality education in a positive learning environment to ensure student success.
Susan earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Notre Dame College and earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Georgia Southern University. She recently earned a leadership certificate from Georgia State University and plans to expand her education in the coming years. Although not a Georgia native, Susan has lived in Fulton County for the past fifteen years. She is married and has three incredible children. Her husband, Chris, is a Milton High School Graduate who owns a classic car restoration business in Cherokee County. Her oldest daughter, Lena, graduated from Milton High School and is now a rising junior at Georgia Southern University. Her daughter, Olivia, will graduate from Milton High School in a few weeks and will attend Ole Miss in the fall. Bryan, her youngest child, is a rising junior at Milton High School.
