Lighting the Path: Asa G. Hilliard Elementary Recognized as a Lighthouse School
Asa G. Hilliard Elementary School has reached a defining milestone, earning the prestigious Leader in Me Lighthouse School designation, a national recognition reserved for schools that exemplify excellence in leadership development, academic achievement, and school culture. For Principal Tiambi Walker, the honor reflects years of intentional focus on developing not just strong students, but confident, capable leaders.
“Becoming a Leader in Me Lighthouse School Champion powerfully affirms Asa G. Hilliard Elementary’s mission and vision of developing the whole child in a positive, inclusive, and high-achieving learning environment,” Walker said.
The Lighthouse designation follows a rigorous, multi-year evaluation process that examines how deeply leadership principles are embedded into the school’s daily practices. At Asa G. Hilliard, those principles are not an add-on; they are foundational. From the classroom to the cafeteria, students are consistently encouraged to take ownership of their learning, set goals, and reflect on their progress.
“It demonstrates that leadership is woven into daily instruction and schoolwide practices, empowering our scholars to take ownership of their learning, set meaningful goals, and lead with purpose,” Walker explained.
Students actively engage in leadership through a variety of structures, including leadership portfolios, goal-setting notebooks, and data tracking systems that make their growth visible. These tools are reinforced by schoolwide practices aligned to the Leader in Me framework, ensuring consistency and clarity across every grade level.
Beyond the classroom, leadership opportunities extend into extracurricular and community-facing roles. Students serve as ambassadors, participate in programs like STEM GEMS and Panther Power Leaders, and take the lead during family engagement events such as Literacy Night and Curriculum Night. In these moments, students demonstrate not only what they have learned, but who they are becoming.
“The Lighthouse designation celebrates how our community partners and families collaborate with the school to cultivate confident, capable leaders, reinforcing a culture where every voice matters and everyone contributes,” Walker said.
The path to Lighthouse status was intentional and required devotion. Walker describes it as a three-year journey built on shared accountability among staff, students, and families.
“The journey was grounded in vision, persistence, and collective accountability,” she said. “From inception, the school established a solid foundation by committing to shared leadership practices.”
A key component of that journey was the use of Wildly Important Goals (WIGs), which helped drive focus and measurable progress. Students, teachers, and teams regularly set, tracked, and reflected on goals tied to academics, behavior, and leadership development.
The impact also extends beyond students to include staff and the broader school community.
“Asa G. Hilliard has applied the Leader in Me Lighthouse principles by intentionally embedding leadership, ownership, and accountability into daily instruction, schoolwide systems, and adult practices,” Walker explained. “For staff, Lighthouse practices have strengthened collaboration, shared leadership, and purposeful instruction, creating consistency across classrooms and programs.”
Now recognized as a Lighthouse School, Asa G. Hilliard Elementary is stepping into a new role, serving as a mentor and model for other schools seeking to build similar cultures of leadership.
“Asa G. Hilliard Elementary is honored and proud to serve as a model school for others across the state and nation,” Walker said. “We view this role as both a privilege and a responsibility - to lead with humility, share best practices, and continue growing as we help shape the future of student-centered leadership education.”
