FCS Wins Best Communities for Music Award
The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation recently recognized Fulton County Schools as “Best Community for Music Education.” NAMM is a national organization that encourages students to begin and remain in instrumental music and provides resources for music educators.
FCS has received this award 27 times annually since NAMM began and is one of only two school districts nationwide to have this distinction.
“This national distinction directly impacts my classroom by showing students that music is an essential academic subject where everyone belongs, not just the naturally talented,” explained Stonewall Tell Elementary School music teacher Kimberly Lott. “Ultimately, this recognition proves to the wider community that our work is a purposeful, highly skilled crat that gives Fulton County students the absolute best opportunity to grow and thrive.”
Coordinator of Performing Arts Dr. Matt Koperniak said, “We’re always excited every year. A lot of work goes into the application process. The credit really does span 27 years in that it shows such a long commitment to our school board’s commitment to music and all of the arts.”

He notes that the support of the school board, district and school leadership, students and community partners is important for FCS’ music programs.
Johns Creek High School Director of Orchestra Young Kim has taught band and orchestra in Fulton County Schools for 38 years.
He said, “The longevity of this award demonstrates that music education is not treated as an extracurricular luxury, but rather as a vital component of student development, supported at every level—from school leadership to the broader community.”
The application process requires extensive data collection across all grade levels and music programs in the district. Music programs include standards-based music curriculum and music therapy in elementary schools, music technology in high school and for grades 6 to 12, band, chorus and orchestra. Student musicians have numerous performance opportunities, from within their schools and communities to internationally.
“I have personally witnessed the exceptional quality of teaching and learning that takes place across our district, particularly in music education,” Kim said. “Because of the district’s continued support, our students have access to strong curricula, quality instruments, and enriching performance opportunities that help them grow both musically and personally. It fosters a culture of pride and excellence, where students understand that they are part of a highly valued program.”
“Music education is more than performance-based learning,” said Bear Creek Middle School music teacher Adria Smith. “It develops confidence, discipline, creativity, collaboration, cultural awareness and critical thinking skills that students carry into every aspect of their lives.”
Koperniak said the district will celebrate with all music teachers during pre-planning this fall.
“This award not only celebrates individual achievement,” said Smith. “It also affirms the importance of sustaining and investing in music education programs throughout Fulton County Schools.”
