FCS Visual Arts Students Participate in State-Wide Symposium

Seven students from five Fulton County high schools displayed their work at the All-State Art Symposium at Piedmont University in Demorest, Georgia on February 27. Students attended the all-day event to view student art, network and take art classes.

Georgia high school art teachers submitted student work, and over 800 pieces were featured in this year’s show.

Banneker art teacher Shakirah Bryant has supported sophomore Brittany Villarreal’s work since last year.

“As a freshman, I was able to see her creativity in Intro to Art,” said Bryant. I put her in photography this year. Her work translated into this cool composition.”

Milton student Tamia Tomlinson showed a photography piece.

“Tamia has an eye for composition, lighting, and capturing the most memorable moments in time,” said Drew Brown, a Milton High School art teacher.

To recognize the hard work in each piece, Chattahoochee High School art teacher Kara Price said, “We displayed the accepted artwork in our front office the week before artwork needs to be dropped off, and we got a ton of positive enthusiasm from staff, parents and students.”

Cambridge senior Erin Cook has created a 35x42 inch painting, which took most of the fall semester to complete.

“The meaning of the piece is how I feel like I’m losing the memories I have of specific moments,” explained Cook. “It was my first AP art piece.”

Natalie Hudson, Cook’s art teacher, said “All students deserve to have access to their work in a gallery. It encourages students to talk about their work and ideas.”

In Hudson’s art classes, students learn about the practical parts of being an artist.

“We talk about the process of marketing, the process of relevance and integrity of their work, and the confidence that comes with that,” she said.

“Students who get this opportunity are more likely to continue to grow in their skills and creativity,” said Cambridge High School Principal Ashley Agans. “This connects to finding colleges and careers with avenues for them to grow.”

“The opportunity aligns with Georgia Department of Education standards for the visual arts curriculum, specifically allowing students to experience ‘real world’ opportunities outside of the classroom,” said Banneker High School Principal Vincent Golden.
