When English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher Tracy Jackson arrived at Tri-Cities High School, he had no idea how quickly he would make an impact. Jackson was one of 60 teachers from school systems and charter schools across Georgia recognized by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) as an Exemplary ESOL teacher.

"I began working with Fulton County Schools (FCS) in the 2021 school year, so it was an honor to be recognized," Jackson said. "I feel more validated in the work I'm doing."

Tri-Cities Principal Dr. Ethel Lett agrees.

"Mr. Jackson goes over and beyond to ensure his ESOL students are part of our Tri-Cities bulldog family," Dr. Lett said. "He infuses his lessons with cultural influences from all over."

Recent Tri-Cities High graduate Fatoumata Sadio Basse, Jackson's student, was also recognized by the GaDOE. She was named the 2023 Georgia DOE Exemplary English Learner (EL) Student. Jackson and Basse were recognized in May.

Basse, who is fluent in English, French, and Wolof, was a dual-enrolled student. She completed college courses while she was a student at Tri-Cities.

"Fatoumata was always trying to do her best and asked for feedback," Jackson said. "During her senior year, she volunteered as a tutor, assisted with homework assignments, and translated for students new to the country. She also supported underclassmen by giving advice and sharing her past struggles as a student."

As an honor student, Basse connected with both teachers and peers.

"Fatoumata is passionate about learning and continues to build positive relationships with our school community," Dr. Lett said.

Jackson's advocacy for his students is evident.

"Mr. Jackson was recognized for his passionate teaching and commitment to his students and to the ESOL community at Tri-Cities," said FCS ESOL coordinator Wendy Newbold. "We are thrilled to have both Mr. Jackson and Fatoumata represent Fulton County and receive these prestigious awards."

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is the state-funded language instruction educational program for eligible English learners (ELS) in grades K-12 in Georgia public schools. For more information on the program, visit www.gadoe.org.
