Public Hearings Set for S.L. Lewis Elementary School Closure
As promised by the one-penny sales tax for education (ESPLOST), a new facility will be built to replace S.L. Lewis Elementary School. For this to happen, the Fulton County School Board must first decommission the current building so it can be torn down and construction can begin.
As part of the legal process for closing a school building, the Fulton County Board of Education will hold two public hearings: February 8, 2024, and February 20, 2024. Both public hearings will begin at 6 p.m. at Fulton County Schools’ South Learning Center, located at 4025 Flat Shoals Road in Union City.
If approved by the school board, S.L. Lewis Elementary School will close at the end of the current school year with students reassigned to Mary M. Bethune Elementary School next fall. A replacement school is slated to be built on the existing S.L. Lewis site and will open in August 2026. More information about the timeline for proposed closure/consolidation is posted here.
All parents and community members are welcome to attend and voice their thoughts. Written comments also can be mailed to Fulton County Schools at 6201 Powers Ferry Road NW, Atlanta GA 30339. Those submitting a comment should write “Superintendent’s Office/School Closures” on the outside envelope to ensure it is received.
