Milton Library Displays Student Art in Celebration of Youth Art Month

Milton Library Displays Student Art in Celebration of Youth Art Month
Milton Art Exhibit

On a Wednesday afternoon in March, elementary students and their families, plus art teachers, principals and Fulton County Schools officials gathered at the Milton Library in Milton for a reception honoring forty young artists. The event celebrated Youth Art Month, which started in 1961 as a nationwide initiative to encourage children's interest in art education.

It's just one such event happening monthly at the Milton Library showcasing student art from area schools.

In 2018, Katie Argentina, Sweet Apple Elementary School art teacher and fine arts support professional for elementary schools across northwest Fulton County, connected with Milton Library Branch Manager Todd Williamson about regularly displaying student art in the children's program room.

For the art display last month, art teachers from ten northwest Fulton County schools chose students to represent their grade levels.

"Having their work on display helps them see themselves as an artist," explained Argentina.

Allison Elder is the art teacher at Summit Hill Elementary, which participated in the event.

"It's a really cool feeling to be at the event and see the huge smiles on the students' faces when they walk in with their parents to show them their artwork," Elder said.

Though the Youth Art Month display is just one of a number of art displays that rotate through the children's program room, Williamson says there are two other reasons for these shows. One, it gives the children's space new décor each month.

"We also thought that having a reception to celebrate the student's artwork would help the library see additional traffic," he said. "I ask for a few minutes at the start of the reception to welcome our students, families and any other guests to the Milton Library, talk to them about the fantastic programs and events at the building and make sure families/children have library cards."

Summit Hill Elementary Principal Dr. Lorrie Bearden likes that the Milton Library offers this opportunity to her students.

"I love that the Milton Library has embraced the small-town feel," she said. "That feeling of community is great."
