Mathematical High Achievers: Fulton County Students Excel Beyond State and RESA
Fulton County Schools (FCS) continues to outperform both the state and Metro Regional Education Service Agencies (RESA) in mathematics, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s (GADOE) April 2024 Georgia Milestones results. FCS students showed significant gains in the combined proficient and distinguished performance levels.
Middle school students led the charge with a 7% increase in scores compared to 2023, while elementary and high school students followed with 1.8% and 1.7% increases, respectively. Among elementary grades, fourth-grade students surpassed state scores by 13% and Metro RESA scores by 11%, marking a notable achievement.
“We are incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work of our students and educators,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. “These results reflect their commitment to excellence in mathematics.”
Sixth graders outperformed the state by 12% and Metro RESA by 8%. Similarly, high school algebra students exceeded the state average by 12% and Metro RESA by 11%. This year’s math results are released separately due to an updated alignment with the new K-12 Mathematics Standards, which were implemented during the 2023-24 school year following their adoption by the State Board of Education in July 2023.
Georgia Milestones ranks student performance in four categories: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner, and Distinguished Learner. Due to recent adjustments in the Distinguished Learner cut scores, GADOE advises that comparisons to prior years in this category may not be accurate. However, scale scores and the percentage of students in the Developing and Proficient Learner levels remain comparable to previous years.
