In March, 72 Fulton County Schools (FCS) sophomores and juniors were notified of their acceptance into the Georgia Governors Honors Program (GHP), a residential educational experience for public, private, charter and homeschooled sophomore and junior finalists.

The program provides enrichment beyond the regular classroom experience. FCS students will attend classes June 16 through July 13 on the Georgia Southern University campus in Statesboro, Georgia. Classes, evening social activities, rooms, and meals are provided by the program. The only expense not covered is travel to and from the campus.

The GHP candidate process began in August 2023 when students with a high aptitude in a specific subject were nominated by faculty at the school level. More than 550 students across the district, representing every area of academic and creative study, were nominated. Applications were reviewed by FCS teachers with expertise in the applicant’s applied field of study. There were 205 nominee spaces determined by the state that were allotted to the district. Of those nominees, 133 applicants were chosen by the state as semifinalists. Semifinalists then committed to an interview/audition event on February 24 with the GHP office.

FCS faculty and staff supported the nominees every step of the way. In early February, a GHP extravaganza was held at the Teaching Museum North to prepare FCS semifinalists for their interview/audition at the state level. Guests in the student’s applied field were on hand at the event to provide additional advice and insight.

“GHP isn’t just another event or accolade for these students,” said Jessica Sevin, coordinator of Advanced Studies for Fulton County Schools. “It’s a transformative experience that will stay with them the rest of their lives.”

The goal of the program is to enrich, inspire and prepare the next generation of critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders for global success. Congratulations to the FCS Georgia Governors Honors Program finalists and alternates!
