Fulton County Schools Junior Develops Revolutionary AI Tool Transforming Ocular Disease Diagnosis

Applying cybersecurity and machine learning to healthcare challenges, Shiv Garg, a high school junior at Fulton County Schools Innovation Academy, has created EyeAI, a cutting-edge tool that uses artificial intelligence to help diagnose eye diseases. Shiv trained EyeAI using advanced computer technology and a database of over 3,200 eye images.

With an impressive 80% accuracy, EyeAI can detect 45 different eye conditions, including diabetic eye disease and optic disc problems. The tool serves as a secondary diagnostic aid for ophthalmologists while also offering preliminary diagnoses for individuals, helping identify the need for eye care and treatment.

Ginny Berkemeier, PhD, Shiv’s former instructor and mentor, shared, “Shiv’s passion lies in combining his love for technology and science to make a positive impact on others. Driven by a desire to help underserved communities with limited access to ophthalmologists, Shiv developed EyeAI to offer free preliminary diagnoses. This accessible, low-cost, and low-touch system for ocular disease diagnosis has the potential to revolutionize public health globally, improving countless lives.”

Unlike traditional eye exams that require expensive equipment and specialists, EyeAI is a publicly accessible web-based tool that allows users to upload retinal images and receive nearly instant results. This makes it significantly easier and more affordable for patients, especially those in underserved areas, to catch eye problems early.

“EyeAI is designed to make healthcare more accessible, giving people a low-cost way to detect vision problems early,” Shiv explained.

Not only is EyeAI a breakthrough for patients, but it also supports doctors by providing quick and accurate assistance in diagnosing eye diseases. Its AI-driven framework offers a scalable solution for healthcare settings, improving efficiency in disease and treatment.

Shiv emphasized, “EyeAI has significant potential to bridge gaps in global health equity by providing low-cost, rapid, and accessible ocular disease diagnosis. Leveraging machine learning is essential for early disease detection and improving the efficiency of health services.”

Shiv plans to continue enhancing EyeAI by expanding its database to further improve diagnostic accuracy, with the ultimate goal of reducing preventable blindness worldwide. His innovative work has already earned recognition from respected organizations, including Boehringer Ingelheim and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In addition to his academic and technological achievements, Shiv is a member of the Student Leadership Johns Creek class of 2025, where he continues to grow as a leader and contribute to his community. Shiv remains committed to using technology to make healthcare more equitable and accessible for everyone.
