FCS holds 3rd Annual Middle School Expo
The 3rd annual Middle School Expo, held in January at Banneker High School, brought career visions to life for students across the district. Designed as an interactive experience, the event introduced middle schoolers to a variety of career paths available in Fulton County high schools and beyond.
According to event organizer Angela Wilborn, the expo serves as a critical step in helping students make informed decisions about their future coursework and career interests.
"The goal is to expose middle school students to the different career pathways offered within our Fulton County high schools, so they can choose electives that interest them," Wilborn said.
Throughout the day, students engaged in hands-on activities that provided a glimpse into real-world professions. They practiced culinary knife skills under the guidance of experienced chefs, learned life-saving CPR techniques from healthcare professionals, and explored the world of coding, each experience offering a potential spark for a future career.
"They experienced job skills to prepare them for work after graduation or to continue in that pathway in college or technical school," Wilborn added.
The event also highlighted the strong connections between classroom learning and workforce readiness. Representatives from various industries and high school career and technical education (CTE) programs were on-site to answer questions and share insights into different career fields, ensuring students left with a broader understanding of their options.
By offering students an early look at the opportunities ahead, the Middle School Expo plays a key role in guiding them toward academic and career success.
A standout moment was the impressive work from Webb Bridge Middle School’s Audio Video and Technology students, who captured the event by conducting interviews and recording footage. “My students are always looking for ways to use their skills, so they conducted interviews and shot lots of B-roll,” teacher Sarah Hochhauser remarked. “They were self-motivated.”
In addition to the Middle School Expo, the district also hosts a work-based learning expo for students who have completed a pathway. Both events provide unique opportunities for students to experience different industries firsthand and spark interest in future careers.
