FCS Celebrates Family Engagement Month with District-Wide Family Matters Event

In celebration of National Family Engagement Month, Fulton County Schools (FCS) will again host Family Matters, a district-wide event to celebrate and engage FCS families. Building on last year’s success, which attracted nearly 1,000 attendees, Family Matters will be hosted at two schools, one in the northern part of the district and the other in the south, to ensure access for families across Fulton County. This year’s event expands in scope with new activities, resources, and a focus on middle and high school students.

Family Matters will take place on two dates and locations:

  • Mimosa Elementary School (North Fulton) on November 13 from 4-8 pm
  • Gullatt Elementary School (South Fulton) on November 14 from 4-8 pm

Designed as a “drop-in/drop-out” event, families can attend sessions that fit their schedule and enjoy more than 30 interactive, hands-on activities.

“I’m most looking forward to seeing our whole family approach come together and become alive again,” said Rebecca Goddard, M.Ed., coordinator of Federal Programs at FCS. “In education, we focus on the whole child, but this is our time to focus on the whole family.”

This year’s Family Matters event will feature live performances and a variety of hands-on, make-and-take activities, including cooking demos, family chair yoga, story writing, family written puppeteer improvisation, and a passport to prizes program. Families will receive passports to collect stickers from activities, which will provide opportunities for giveaways, including books, school supplies, and big-ticket items like televisions. Sessions for middle and high school students include the College Bound Institute, a financial quiz bowl, and the Soul Food Cypher, which connects rap with literacy. Additionally, internal FCS departments, such as Health, JROTC, Music, and Art, will be present, alongside community vendors and resources, including the Fulton County Police Department.

To provide a memorable experience, families will engage in activities that connect learning with positive memories, creating moments that will be remembered long after the event.

“We’re excited to give our families an enriching experience,” shared FCS Family Engagement specialist Lisa Humphrey. “Families are truly the heart of our schools, and we want this event to reflect their importance.”

This free event is open to all FCS families, but space is limited. Participants are encouraged to register at www.fultonschools.org/familymatters.
