FCS beats state/national ACT scores; participation continues to grow

Fulton County Schools (FCS) 2023 graduating seniors have exceeded the state and national ACT composite scores for the seventh consecutive year and are participating in greater numbers. While recording a slight dip in the composite score of .2 from 2022, Fulton outpaced both the state and nation in each subject area and met all four of ACT’s College Readiness benchmarks of English, math, reading and science. The Fulton County Board of Education is committed to offering all students an opportunity to participate in a district-paid administration of the ACT during the spring of their junior year.

“We are pleased to see the progress of our students’ test performance results beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels,” said Board President Kimberly Dove. “As a Board, we are glad to provide the resources to make college readiness accessible to all students.”

Nine Fulton County high schools scored above the state (21.3) and national (19.5) composite scores: Alpharetta, Cambridge, Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek, Milton, Northview, Riverwood International Charter, and Roswell high schools. Northview’s average composite score of 26.7 is the highest in the district. This score is 7.2 points higher than the national composite score of 19.5 and 5.4 points higher than the state average score of 21.3.

Test participation rose from 46.4% in 2022 to 47.8% in 2023, a 1.4% gain.

“It is heartening to see more students opting to take ACT,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney. “Knowing that some students perform better on the ACTs, this shows a positive trend of students taking advantage of additional readiness assessment options to present themselves to colleges in their best light.”
