Creekside High Makes History with First Girls State Basketball Championship

Creekside High School’s Girls Varsity Basketball team made history when they won the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 4A State Basketball championship in March. It was the first championship win in school history. The team also finished the season with an impressive 32 wins and 0 losses, making it the only undefeated girls basketball team in Georgia.

“We defeated defending state champions Maynard Jackson High School 57-37,” said Coach Akennia Ellis. “After suffering a 60-70 loss the previous season to Dalton High School, the team set out with one goal in mind: winning a state championship.”

Coach Ellis had a strategic plan to accomplish the goal.

“Non-region opponents were intentionally scheduled to provide the team with state champion caliber competition so that we could make a deeper playoff run than the previous year,” Ellis said. “The team exceeded expectations and made the season even more historic as the team went undefeated.”

Several key players contributed to the historic championship run.

“C’India Dennis was the top performer for the team all around as well as at the state level,” Ellis said. “She is arguably the best player at her position, point guard, in Class 4A. She averaged 21 points per game, 6 rebounds per game, and 6 assists per game.”

Another key player who helped seal the win was senior guard Skye Cleveland, who averaged 11 points per game and 5 rebounds per game. Jacy Mitchell had 9 points per game and 3 steals per game.

As they closed in on their historic championship, one senior made a significant impact.

“Lia Moore showed up big in the championship game, grabbing an impressive 10 rebounds and scoring the first basket for us, a 3-pointer,” Ellis said.

While most players will return next season, seniors Danielle Butler, Skye Cleveland, Alishya Johnson, and Lia Moore will be graduating from Creekside.

Athletic Director Dr. Mekia Troy praised the dedication of the student-athletes on the court and in the classroom.

“Basketball is a long season, and the team and staff were committed to excellence, which was proven by the undefeated record and overall team GPA of 3.4,” Dr. Troy said.

Coach Ellis, who earned the honor of GHSA Region 4A Coach of the Year, has high hopes for next season.

“We’d like to win back-to-back titles and potentially continue our undefeated run,” she said. “We would also like to have all our seniors receive scholarship offers to further their education.”

The Creekside community showed up in full force to celebrate the first-time champions in April. The team arrived at the school entrance in a trolley, greeted by cheering supporters eager to commemorate their historic victory and undefeated season.
