Asa G. Hilliard Elementary School hosted the “Decades of Excellence Black History Program” on February 27, bringing a full circle event with celebrations honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Asa G Hilliard III, an esteemed scholar and champion of African-centered education.

This year’s celebration highlighted Dr. Hilliard’s accomplishments and emphasized the school’s continued initiative to nurture and empower the next generation. The event included special guests from Dr. Hilliard’s family, including his late wife, Dr. Patsy Jo Hilliard, who served as a former mayor of East Point. The commemoration also welcomed Dr. Hilliard’s son, grandchildren, local patrons, and friends and families of scholars.

A mural honoring Dr. Hilliard was unveiled at the event and students from the school’s pep squad presented a tribute to HBCU history.

“Our tribute to the Divine 9 and their impact on HBCUs and their communities displayed cultural awareness,” Asa G Hilliard Elementary School Principal Tiambi Walker said. “We were able to demonstrate the importance of education and connect that to Dr. Hilliard's work of educating African American children. Students, staff, and families are still raving about the event.”

She also mentioned the gratitude email Dr. Patsy Hilliard wrote to the school the day after the celebration, pledging her continued support to the school and its community.

Asa G. Hilliard Elementary School carries its name with pride and stays committed to Dr. Hilliard’s vision of educational excellence, cultural pride, and academic success for all students.
