Aquarium Reopens at Asa G. Hilliard Elementary School

The Action Jackson Media Scholars’ Aquarium is officially back open at Asa G. Hilliard Elementary after a one-year hiatus. The interactive aquatic learning feature supports literacy, STEM learning, social‑emotional learning, and responsibility.

“The aquarium has been a feature of the Media Scholar Center for several years, serving as a long‑standing part of the school’s literacy and enrichment environment,” says Media & Educational Technology Instructor Lori Jackson.

The aquarium has two fully equipped tanks with a collection of goldfish and koi fish. The tanks include natural habitat features that make the environment visually stimulating, calming, and educational for students.

“Students have become very engaged in identifying the fish and observing their unique behaviors,” says Jackson.

The aquarium went on a one-year hiatus due to the previous tank developing mold issues. It allowed the school to rebuild the aquarium with a stronger infrastructure and have the support of community partners such as the non-profit “Love for Animals.”

“Many children in Fulton County have had limited interaction with animals,” said “Love for Animals” Founder Jasmine Crisp. “Some have never experienced caring for a pet or learning about animal behavior. They focus on providing animal safety classes and workshops to help students understand how to safely interact with animals in their environment.”

Crisp is also a Fulton County Schools parent. She saw firsthand how impactful her programs could be within the school community.

“This helps students learn about humane animal care and entrepreneurship,” said Crisp. “These workshops not only teach practical skills but also show students how creativity, craftsmanship, and compassion can translate into real-world opportunities in the animal industry.”

Love for Animals also provided animal-themed books, reading buddy stuffed animals, and tools that connect literacy with pet care. Additional collaborations include The Animal Institute, Maddie’s Fund, and PetSmart.

“These partnerships allow students to benefit from real‑world community engagement, while also strengthening the school’s resources,” says Jackson.

The aquarium is freely accessible in the Media Scholar Center to students and teachers throughout the school day. There’s also a Counseling Suite aquarium available during counseling sessions to support social‑emotional wellness. The reopening of the aquarium is an asset in creating a conducive learning environment for children.
